a popular theme in art and literature during the penny dreadful period of European history is that of “memento mori”, which translates from latin as “remember you have to die.” at a time when spirituality was intwined with nearly every aspect of daily life, this reminder of mortality and to keep an eye trained towards the afterlife was a natural source of artistic inspiration. the “danse macabre” was literally the dance of death, and was meant to serve as a reminder that everyone is united in death regardless of their station in life. these socks are a little less macabre than that, but you can appreciate their simple lace pattern that nods to repeating motifs in baroque design.
welcome to a season of penny dreadfuls, and socks inspired by the 19th century equivalent of pulp fiction.
