tired of surface-level chats and no real support at your local crafting meet-up?

connect, create, and get confident

the doors of the creative coven community are open!

find your community of badass fibre witches and build your creative confidence with 24/7 access to top tools and resources about everything from knitting to herbalism to (real) witchcraft!

the first time you heard the words “fibre witch” together in a sentence, your ears pricked up and your heart beat a little faster. is that what i am? can i be a witch too? do the little wishes i whisper into my knitting for loved ones really count as spells? and there are more people like me? could it be that easy?

being a witch is something you’re still not always 100% sure about. sure, your bones tell you it’s something real, but then every time you broach it in conversation at your local craft night, people around you laugh and chatter about the witch’s costume they made their kid for halloween one year (blissfully oblivious to the anti-semitic roots of that particular stereotype, of course). so you give a nervous smile, drop your eyes back down to the project in your lap, and are left to google “how to make potions” back home when you’re alone.

contrary to what instagram and pop culture tell you, a witch doesn’t only look like one thing. they don’t have to worship the devil à la the chilling adventures of sabrina or have a triangle shelf full of crystals on their bedroom wall (although they are very pretty). you don’t have to keep a daily tarot practice or trace your lineage back to the salem witch trials to be a “real witch.” and if you are interested in tarot and/or ancestral magic, there are resources out there that can teach you and address the complexities of racism, colonialism, queerphobia, environmentalism, and other concerns that are conveniently ignored by those peddling “beginner witch kits” (*cough, cough,* sephora) or leaning into pastel QAnon territory.

in fact, you can even learn how to weave your creative practice together with simple rituals for everyday magic. and you don’t have to do it alone.

when the pandemic hit…

i found myself stuck inside. the weekly knit nights at my lys, just around the corner from my house, were gone, i couldn’t travel to see friends, and for many weeks it was just me and my dog hanging out in the house and avoiding others on our daily walks.

i also discovered small pockets of online communities of wonderful humans, and wondered whether it would be possible to bring together my own community of like-minded fibre witches… makers who gave a shit about each other and the wider world, coming from a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds and able to share with one another regardless of geographical location or ability to leave their home. i dreamed of sharing all of my favourite resources with them, of having all the questions i’m asked most frequently all answered in one convenient place. and as the world slowly shifts into its new versions of normal, i want to keep that core of connection and creation going while helping fellow fibre witches to build their confidence in themselves and their creative journeys…

how it works

the creative coven community is a monthly membership space (with the option to support annually if you prefer). you can stay as long as you like and cancel any time if you need to leave. you’ll be automatically charged your fee each month/year and have access to all the goodies inside anytime you log into your account! we meet monthly via zoom for a craft/knit night, and also enjoy extra events like live rounds of the creative coven challenge during other times in the year.

if you cancel your membership, you will lose access at that time, and if you rejoin at a later date you’ll be charged the current fee at that time.

not really interested in the community but love [insert snort & cackle, from field to skin, willow and her shenanigans…]?

the creative coven community acts as my personal alternative to patreon, the popular online platform that allows people to support their favourite artists, activists, and projects. if you love snort & cackle, from field to skin, willow’s shenanigans, or just generally want to support me/sunflower knit and what i do for the maker community, joining the creative coven community is the easiest and best way to do that on an ongoing basis!

the community commitment

while i can’t guarantee that joining the creative coven community will solve every question or moment of doubt you have as you go through your day-to-day life, i can promise you this:

💝 time every month to sit down with your current wip, your favourite snack, and a group of fabulous supportive fibre witches (and their furry familiars 🐾) from around the world to catch up, connect, and learn from one another (willow and i will be there too!)

📚 24/7 access to the tools and resources i love best to help you learn and grow on your creative everyday magic journey, whether that’s upping your herbalism skills, finding your knitting mojo again with the creative coven challenge, playing with natural dyes, or diving into the history of witches from around the world

🫂 a safe experience that prioritizes real connection and support over surface-level “love and light” fluff - we come together in real time to see one another’s faces and connect in a meaningful way, and otherwise you’re left to your own devices and schedule without getting lost among long chat threads or feeling glued to your screen

if choosing the monthly option, you will be charged $25 canadian at time of sign-up and $25 recurring for every month following until you cancel your membership. if choosing the yearly option, you will be charged $275 (one month free!) at time of sign-up with recurring payments being charged annually until you cancel. you will retain access to all of the resources and to the monthly group zoom knit/craft nights, as well as any other member perks that are added in future, as long as you are a member in good standing. if you cancel your membership and come back at a later date, you will be charged the current fee as of your rejoin date.

sunflower knit reserves the right to alter and/or cancel all content within the creative coven community, including the monthly zoom knit/craft nights, without warning. by joining the community, you agree to act in good faith and practice kindness with other community members. discrimination of any kind, including but not limited to racism, homophobia, transphobia, ablism, and classism, is strictly prohibited and may result in your removal from the community.

meet your hosts

hi, we’re ash and willow!

i (ash) am the head #bosswitch around tiny coven studios, my home studio on treaty one territory in central canada. i’m a queer femme and hedgewitch in life, and a knitwear designer and natural dyer by profession. my favourite cocktail is a paper plane, and i love any excuse to try out a new recipe with the help of my gardens (i’m working on my historically not-so-green thumb) 🌿

willow’s the official mascot of the community (and sunflower knit in general), but she’s certainly not the only fur baby to grace our screens during the monthly knit nights! willow’s a 90lb lap dog with a healthy dose of attitude (it’s the weimaraner in her) and an insatiable appetite for carrots 🥕 she thinks kids are the best, crowds are the worst, and cats all want to be her best friend 😅

Faq

i’m definitely not a witch. can i join anyway?

absolutely! there are oodles of goodies for everyone, witch or no. knitters will love the creative coven challenge, natural dyers will love the colour journal, and everyone loves willow (even the cat people - she’s quite the charmer).

what if i can’t make it to knit night?

that’s ok! a large portion of our members never come to knit night and instead just make use of the other parts of the community. and some folks just support their favourite project like snort & cackle or from field to skin and literally never log in. it’s totally your call how you engage with the community and its resources.

can i cancel my membership anytime?

yes. you can control your membership 24/7 by logging into your account and navigating to your dashboard.

do i get a refund if i leave part way through my renewal period?

no. you’re charged automatically on the same date every month/year from when you joined, and while you can leave at any time, there are no refunds provided, pro-rated or otherwise. if you’re thinking of leaving, feel free to double check your calendar to time your cancellation with the day or two before your renewal is scheduled.

are there ever in-person events?

at this point in time, no. that would be a super cool idea though! maybe someday…

i’m uncomfortable with swearing. is this the right space for me?

there are typically a fair number of f-bombs dropped during knit night between ash and other regulars, so if that’s gonna stress you out, i recommend skipping it. that being said, you can still access the majority of the rest of the content swear-free. although honestly, if the word “fuck” bothers you that much, you probably also won’t be super stoked about book recommendations like witches, sluts, feminists or the entire decolonization bookshelf… better to find a “love and light” group instead.

my budget is pretty tight right now. can i leave and then come back when that’s not a concern?

absolutely. please do note our policies as outlined above re: partial refunds (they don’t exist) and being subject to the current fee whenever you do rejoin (no grandfathering of old fees if you leave for a time). as long as you’re cool with that, you are absolutely welcome to leave and rejoin whenever/however often you need. the only time someone is fully banned from rejoining is in the extremely unlikely (as in, it hasn’t happened yet) scenario that we have to remove them for the safety of other members.

you mentioned that stuff can be removed without warning. has that happened before?

nope, not yet. in fact, we’ve had the opposite where ash has kept adding more and more goodies to the community! the only thing we foresee potentially being removed is if a downloadable item is retired/updated or if a formerly useful resource becomes harmful for some reason.

can i sign into the community from my phone or tablet?

yuppers! you can access your content from any device connected to the internet. if you’re having issues accessing your account, give us a shout at hello.sunflowerknit@gmail.com.

💗 the sanctuary hub

plus you’re helping to support great projects like snort & cackle, from field to skin, and more!

still not sure if the community is the right place for you?

😬 if you’re sick of keeping up with facebook groups, slack channels, and discord (you cool kid, you)…

🥳 we’ve got none of that here! regularly scheduled zoom hang-outs you can add to your calendar and otherwise you do you.

😬 if you’re not totally comfortable with the whole “witch” label…

🥳 we’ll never make you identify as something you’re not comfortable with. there’s plenty of non-witchy stuff, and if you wanna make it witchy later on, we can help draw the connections to make it easy peasy!

😬 if you have nightmares from the last monthly membership you joined that kept charging your card months after you left…

🥳 have no fear, we literally can’t do that! once you cancel your membership, the payment schedule is severed with it. and if something glitches (mercury rx…), just give us a shout and we’ll fix it for you!

😬 if you’ve been listening to a few too many cult podcasts and don’t wanna fall into “twin flames” territory…

🥳 i literally listen to the same podcasts and am hyper aware of never making members feel like they have to do anything. engage how you like, when you want, leave when you need, and hopefully i get to see what you’re making in the interim.

😬 if you don’t want a repeat of the “let’s just keep to knitting” vibe of your last knit night group…

🥳 i have made a point of telling those people to fuck off quite literally for many years. you’ll find knitters from all over the world and all walks of life in our community. and while i’m pro-herbalism and pro-ancestral medicine/magic, i’m also pro-vaccines and public health as are all our knit night regulars. so be prepared for that when you join us for a virtual cocktail next month 😘

the past few years have been hard - we’ve lost loved ones, lost our old sense of community, lost clear direction of reliable resources to help us learn new things and expand on current passions.

we’ve also found incredible opportunities to connect in new and more accessible ways, to find our people regardless of physical location or restrictions in our ability to move freely around the wider world. and as the world slowly finds its newest equilibrium, we can choose to keep those connections going. we don’t have to abandon the good things we found when we were forced to be more innovative. scarcity mindset doesn’t have to win out. we can make this a “yes and” moment rather than an “either or” one.

the online world existed before the pandemic, and it will definitely continue as we find our ways back out into the physical world too. we get to choose how we engage with both, and love the communities that support us best regardless of whether they’re over zoom or across a table at the coffee shop.

my final words to you (until knit night, of course)…

being a human can be hard. being a creative human can be even harder. and yet, the sagittarius in me is an eternal optimist.

that new hobby we’re learning doesn’t have to be so overwhelming.

that latest knitting skill we’re trying doesn’t have to be so intimidating.

we can do the damn thing.

and we can do it together.

i hope i get to see you in the community. our zoom gatherings are truly highlights of my month every month, and i love hearing from our members about the latest book they’ve been reading or the recipe they just tried or their most recent natural dyeing experiments. humans are inherently creative. and creativity is really just a muscle that needs to be worked out more regularly. i hope you let us bear witness to your practice.

i’m cheering you on no matter what,

xo ash (and willow 🐾)
