cagailt is scottish gaelic for “hearth.” the simple cables in this shawl are a nod to the shapes you'll find dancing in flames, or perhaps in the roundness of hearthstones at the base of the fire, or even in the shape of the coals used to stoke it. the right choice of yarn here will draw the mind accordingly. warm and cozy as is, you can feel free to deepen the garter ridges at the final border if you wish to add a little more depth.
needles: US 7 (4.5mm) 32” (80cm) circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
yarn: 750 yards (687 metres), 300g of dk weight yarn*
sample shown uses harrisville designs’ nightshades (80% american cormo/20% american wool, 250 yards [229 metres], 100g) x 3 skeins in cinder
*note: due to the lofty nature of the suggested yarn, it’s a good idea to grab an extra skein just to be on the safe side so you don’t have to play yarn chicken. use any leftovers for a pair of fingerless mitts or a cute hat!
notions: tapestry needle, 2 stitch markers, cable needle (optional)
gauge: 17 stitches x 26 rows = 4” (10cm), over main body, blocked
