new moon love notes - august 2023

me-made wardrobe NOTES

  • i picked up some cotton overalls from poor michael’s emporium that i’ll be dyeing with goldenrod very shortly, plus a black pair that i’ve already been wearing and love

  • mended a linen hinterland dress for the bazillionth time (it’s about 5 years old at this point and usually needs some fresh stitches added to a seam every few months)

on my needles

  • wolf’s teeth is my colourwork sweater collab with hinterland yarn and will be open for testing asap and available next month

  • nurture bralette with slavic sock (honestly, i would make it with roots flock instead another time, and make a fair amount of adjustments to the short rows for a better fit at the bust, but those kinds of mods are to be expected for something that fits so specifically)

  • cardamom cushion with pasture dk dyed with black knight scabiosa

  • wanderer handshoes made with leftovers from cardamom cushion

  • new shawl design for this year’s advent calendar made with roots flock

find more patterns here and yarn and notions in the shop! if natural yarns intimidate you, check out the knitting with natural yarns masterclass.

dye pot notes

  • plant pigments! (with thanks to this online class)

  • new maiwa classes have opened up and i’m binging a bunch this fall

  • harvests continue

  • i’m making so many things for my installation - stay tuned for photos and video next month of the first small version of it at manitoba fibre festival!

check the creative coven community’s colour journal for my dye recipes, dye profiles, and more! and if you’re a #plantwitch, check out natural dyeing 101 and natural dye supplies in the store.

#bosswitch notes

  • sanctuary is here! the printers did such a stunning job with it and pre-orders have already been shipping out. we’ll be having a book launch party at wolseley wool on september 29th to celebrate.

  • i was at the riding mountain artist residency supported by parks canada and manitoba arts council for two full weeks and made so many things! also got some scheming done but not much computer work done because most of what i do lives in the cloud and i had no internet, so i fell behind in a lot of that work. stay tuned for a video about the creation of my 2022 colour harvest quilt coming to youtube in the very near future.

  • running a small biz these days is hard slugging (as my mum would say) and also i kinda have a hate/love/mostly hate relationship with social media right now that is largely rooted in resentment with how much time i have to spend creating content that doesn’t get seen. so to make it at least more fun for myself, i’m writing a series of short stories this fall in the creative coven community that will create the basis for my content from october-december (and maybe even beyond? we’ll see…).

  • the website will be overhauled in the next couple of months assuming i get my shit together, and we’re in the thick of festival season for me right now, so if you don’t see much happening online for the next six weeks or so it’s because i’m doing a shit ton in-person and behind-the-scenes.

  • i’m back to teaching next month and i can’t wait! the new website will have an events page where you can keep an eye on upcoming events, plus of course the general list in the weekly newsletter is a good reference if you’re wondering where to find me and what i’m up to.

if you’re looking to start your own design biz, the creative coven’s doors are open 24/7.

witch life

  • so much travel in the past month has set me behind on so many things and also has been a good change of pace and fresh perspective on what’s working and what’s not working in my life right now. looking forward to spending a little more time back home again with willow and getting the house ready for the change of seasons - hopefully there will be time for deep cleaning and organizing, batch preparations for harvests, making medicines, dye pots for fun, and just generally making the house more functional for the next projects on my to-do list.

the community is the best place to find my favourite things, from recipes to tutorials to book recommendations.
