making - keep things fresh

do you ever feel like your creative practice has gotten stagnant?

maybe you’ve lost your knitting mojo after the completion of a big deadline, or you just finished your first queen-sized quilt and the idea of more hand stitches makes you want to burn all the fabric, or you’ve fought with your latest me-made wardrobe update and aren’t super happy with the results. or hell, maybe you’ve just been so busy that you haven’t had time to pick up your favourite craft, and now you don’t know how to start again without feeling totally overwhelmed.

trust me, i’ve been there. more than once, in fact!

if there are bigger issues at play (depression, profound grief, massive life upheaval), please find qualified people to support you with those things. that being said, our crafting can often help us through hard times too, so feel free to apply some of these tactics for keeping things fresh!

  • if your social media feeds are stressing you out more than they’re inspiring you, remove similar content from your feed (e.g. if you’re a dyer, don’t look at other dyers regularly) and replace it with something unrelated but still inspiring (i.e. fancy baking)

  • make something small and not from your main practice (i.e. if you’re a knitter then don’t knit something, bake a loaf of bread or sew a pouch or carve a spoon)

  • alternatively, try something new within your practice (swatch a new stitch, learn a new skill, knit someone else’s pattern or with someone else’s yarn or with a new-to-you breed)

  • get outside!

  • surround yourself with the things that inspire you

  • move shit around in your workspace to get a fresh perspective (the selfcare for knitters zine talks about just that)

honestly, a lot of the time we just need to shakes things up a little bit to get us out of our ruts and back into action. give it a try!

if you’re looking for a way to freshen up your knitting, give the creative coven challenge a go! and from february 21-25, you can do it LIVE with the support of other fibre witches and me (and willow)! both creative coven students and the creative coven community will be coming together for the week, and you can join us here.
