making: a natural dyeing ebook

i have something a little terrifying to tell you... i’m writing an ebook about natural dyeing.

it hasn’t come out of nowhere - in fact, people have been asking me for one for several years. but i’ve resisted because, honestly, i didn’t feel like i was the right person to write it. i felt like an imposter (honestly still do a lot of days). i didn’t go to school for this, i’m largely self-taught (but 100% can credit kelly ruth for getting me started), and my focus on fibreshed colour palette here in the north is making me feel even less qualified, because there aren’t really many resources for us up here and so my practice has become even more trial and error.

but my friend tessa talked to me seriously about it again very recently (natural dyeing is actually why we met), and i realized that all those things are why i should write an ebook. i know i’m a good teacher in person, so why can’t i pull those lessons into an easily accessible digital book so anyone can get started on their own practice?

this will not be a how-to manual. that’s not how i teach, and it’s not my practice. i have zero interest in reliable outcomes, at least as far as exact colours, when it comes to my natural dyeing practice. there are enough books out there promising you that already. this will be about engaging in an intentional way with your practice, about letting go of expectations, of working in a harmonious way with the land, of decolonizing your/my relationship with plants. once it’s available, i’ll have a sliding scale rate to make it more accessible to groups looking to work with their local communities too, because this practice is also radical and an important part of fucking with the current power systems. knowledge is power, and the power needs to be back in the hands of the people.

so, that’s where we’re at right now. i’ll let you know how it’s going and when it’s available. let me know if there’s anything in particular that you want to learn, and i’ll see if it’s something i can cover, or i’ll send you some of my favourite resources if not.
