handmade wardrobe: rhinebeck edition!
i’ve been on a bit of a sweater kick recently, and while that’s meant that other projects have fallen a bit to the wayside (aka i have some catch-up knitting to do when i get back from rhinebeck next week), i am so stoked to have TWO sweaters to wear to the hudson valley! and salem, because i get to hang out with my friends ana and maggie too. i’m so excited for this little vacation. hopefully i connect with oodles of wonderful people who love sheep and wool as much as i do (especially with from field to skin’s indiegogo starting this friday).
first up, my latest obsession - colourwork sweaters. yup, i finally got around to it, and i am officially in love. this might just become as intense as my obsession with socks, folx. i used tin can knits’ brilliant strange brew recipe and knit a top-down pullover with a slightly cropped body (just enough to look super cute with high-waisted arenites but still work with regular pants). i used my canadian worsted base in marigold & iron, eastern brazilwood & iron, and quebracho/osage & iron along with undyed white skeins for a vintage-y vibe, and i am completely in love with it. hopefully i don’t spill anything on it…
my second sweater, which was technically the first one i cast on for this trip, is a cropped juniper with long sleeves. i am also obsessed with how this one turned out, even in such a bright colour for my usual wardrobe (my pasture dk dyed with marigolds), and it’ll be super cute with high-waisted everything and layered over dresses. the long sleeves help me feel cozy even with the short length and lace back.
the mods i made were as follows:
3 repeats of chart total so 74 rows on front side
didn’t fold over collar so only 6 rows and then bind off in ribbing
used pasture dk and 5.5mm needle (swatched and went up one needle size for exact gauge - i fucking love how versatile this yarn is)
extended sleeves to 21”, following decreases as written and adding 1” of reverse stockinette and 1” of ribbing
to celebrate the fact that i’ve finally gotten around to fixing the fiddly-ness of the back charts for juniper and cedar, i’m putting them on tiered pricing for the next week!
i was trying to sew myself an estuary skirt with a beautiful wool remnant from the now-defunct woolich mill in pennsylvania, but my sewing machine foot died on me, which i took as a sign that i should just stop trying to fit everything into my tight schedule and relax a bit. and by “relax”, i mean finish dyeing a wholesale order destined for michigan (any guesses on the sweet shop prepping for its arrival?), pack my bags, do a bunch of paperwork, prep 5 new patterns for release (the wee wardrobe will be out once i get back home), and eventually settle in with knitting an ujo tunic from laine issue two with my roots fingering yarn. my goal is to have a garment knit out of each of my main yarn bases (except forage sock) before my november shop update, when i’ll be dropping a small curated selection of sweater quantities of both roots and canadian worsted. plus a little something that you might be excited about if you enjoy colourwork, and some new sweet herbal additions and pretties for your home altars… lyle and my mum have both remarked recently about how i have a lot (too much) going on in my head at any given moment, and it’s true. thank goodness for lists.
